The Scots Guards - The Edinburgh Miltary Tattoo. ![]() The Scots GuardsThe Scots Guards were formed in 1642. Originally Commanded by Archibald, First Marquis of Argyle. The Regiment was formed to protect Scottish settlers in Ulster and become part of the Royal Guard for Charles 1st. Over the centuries the Regiment has been known by a number of different names such as the Scots Fusilier Guards, before having the present title restored by Queen Victoria in 1877. The Scots Guards have fought in every major war and campaign that the British Army has been involved in, including The Seven Year War, American Revolution, Napoleonic War, Crimea War South African War (186 1-1864) World Wars, one and Two, Malaya and most recently the Falkland Islands 1982 and the Gulf 1991 accumulating more than 94 Battle Honours throughout the years. The finest feat recorded in the Scots Guards History was the defence of Hougoumont at Quatre Bras Waterloo on 18th June 1815 where the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards was on the ridge behind the farm of Hougoumont, with its Light Company in the farm buildings with those of the Coldstream and of the two battalions of First Guards. Throughout the long day, from eleven o’clock in the morning until eight o’clock in the evening, these four companies, and subsequently the whole of the 2nd Battalion of Coldstream and Third Guards frustrated the desperate attempts of nearly 30,000 French to capture this key position. The Scots Guards are currently operational in Iraq their current tasks include protecting power supplies, and guarding the main road between Basra and Fallujah. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo began life in 1950 and countries from all over the world participate in the grounds of Edinburgh Castle to the spectacluar sound of the massed pipes and drums of the Scottish regiments.
